Cruises are another way to explore new destinations and spend your 3-week vacation. Some people might think that it’s too long to be on a cruise. However, it’s a great way to explore and unwind if you’re looking for something less hassle and an exciting way to reward yourself.
Plus, you won’t actually going to spend the entire 20 days on the boat. With this longer itinerary, you will be visiting various countries and get off at a handful of ports where you can explore inland during the day.
In this compilation of the best 3-week cruises, you’ll see various cruises that you can consider before booking anything. There will be cruises from popular cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruiseline, Celebrity Cruises, and Carnival Cruises.
You will also find information about things that you should know, especially if you’re going on a cruise for the first time.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING A CRUISE
First-time going on a cruise? Perhaps you’re unsure if this is something for you. Don’t worry. We will be discussing everything that you should know as a first-timer in this section of this article.
Are cruises for you?
This really depends on people. If you’re prone to motion sickness, this is something you have to consider. I get car sick on a long-distance bus trip, but not on boats, cars, or planes.
Another thing is being off-shore for a long period of time. Some people would be claustrophobic being on a boat for more than a day or two.
Finally, you should really consider going on a shorter cruise first. My first ever cruise was on a Royal Caribbean 7-day cruise. I thought it was a perfect amount of time for me to check if cruises are something I’d enjoy.
There are also a lot shorter cruises out there, such as 2 to 3-day cruises or what they call “sample cruises”.
What are the inclusions and exclusions?
This can depend on each cruise line and the duration of the trip. But for the sake of this discussion, I’m referring to major ones such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, and Carnival Cruise Lines.
All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are all included without extra free, which you usually find at the common buffet area. In the buffet area, you’ll find non-alcoholic beverages that are also included. These buffets are usually open pretty much all the time but check with the cruise first since some have specific “operating hours”.
The use of a swimming pool, gym, theatre, rock climbing, and other facilities are often free of charge but might require you to “reserve” your time or seat in advance.
Now, when it comes to excluded features, these are usually applicable to off-shore activities such as city tours, snorkelling/diving activities, and even the tour of the boat you’re cruising on.
Then, there are also “speciality restaurants“, where you could sit and dine for extra meals with specific cuisines such as Japanese, grilling, Italian, or French at an extra fee.
There are also facilities such as casinos, sports bars, boutique shops, personal gym classes, spas, and massages where you have to pay extra as well.
Are tipping mandatory
Again, this depends on the cruise lines. For example, P&O, Marella Cruises, Celestyal Cruises, and MSC Cruises decided to include gratuities in the cruise fare.
On the other hand, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Carnival still gives the guest options to “tip” before embarking or before disembarking the boat. Either way, it’s mandatory.
The cost also varies a lot. But the average is about $12 to $15 a day per person. You should also remember that when you order
Is there wifi onboard
Yes. Almost all cruise lines nowadays have onboard Wi-Fi. However, they’re still in the early stages and usually unreliable and honestly expensive.
If your concern is about staying connected with your travel companion (it’s quite easy to lose each other on such massive boats), most cruise lines have an app where you can add people cruising with you.
You will connect to the onboard wifi and be able to chat with each other. You don’t need to avail a “wifi package” for this feature to work.
What cruise lines are there
Many cruise lines are available for sailing through various regions and countries. I understand how overwhelming and confusing it can be to choose which one to book. To help you give some ideas, here’s a quick list of cruise lines and who are they suitable for:
- Royal Caribbean International: Known for its innovative ship designs, Royal Caribbean offers thrilling onboard activities like rock climbing, surfing, and zip-lining. It’s perfect for families and adventure seekers.
- Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival is famous for its fun and festive atmosphere. It’s a great choice for those looking for lively entertainment, vibrant nightlife, and a budget-friendly option.
- Norwegian Cruise Line: NCL is known for its “Freestyle Cruising” concept, offering flexibility in dining and entertainment choices. It’s suitable for travellers who prefer a more relaxed and customizable experience.
- Disney Cruise Line: Designed with families in mind, Disney offers a magical experience with character meet-and-greets, themed activities, and top-notch childcare facilities.
- Holland America Line: Renowned for its elegant ships and refined atmosphere, Holland America is ideal for mature travellers who appreciate classic cruising with excellent dining and cultural enrichment programs.
- Celebrity Cruises: Celebrity stands out for its modern luxury, offering gourmet dining, stylish accommodations, and spa experiences. It’s a great choice for couples and those seeking a sophisticated voyage.
- Virgin Voyages: Virgin Voyages is an adults-only cruise line, offering a trendy and contemporary experience. It’s ideal for travellers looking for a more adult-oriented, fun-filled cruise.
- MSC Cruises: With a Mediterranean flair, MSC offers a blend of European elegance and international appeal. It’s suitable for diverse travellers looking for a touch of European charm.
- Princess Cruises: Princess is known for its diverse itineraries and exceptional service. It caters to a wide range of travellers, including families, couples, and solo adventurers.
- Viking Ocean Cruises: Viking provides a more intimate and culturally immersive experience, focusing on destination exploration. It’s perfect for mature travellers interested in history and culture. Viking’s ocean cruises are designed for adults and are known for their relaxed and culturally immersive experiences. They do not have casinos or children’s facilities on board.
- Seabourn: Seabourn is synonymous with luxury and personalized service. Its small, ultra-luxury ships cater to discerning travellers seeking an indulgent and intimate cruise experience.
- Oceania Cruises: Oceania is an adult-oriented cruise line with a focus on culinary experiences and cultural enrichment. While not exclusively for adults, it attracts an older, sophisticated crowd.
Most of these cruise lines are suitable for young people and older crowds. But when it comes to family travellers with young children, you should opt for ones that are specifically designed for kids to make sure they have a lot of fun.
If your children are around 15 years old and up, you most likely wouldn’t want to bring your kids on a Disney cruise. Cruise Critic is a great place to find the upcoming and best 3-week cruises available.
Port of call
The Port of call is exactly what it is. It’s where the ship will depart. Most of them are near a major city or airport, so getting to your port of call shouldn’t be a problem.
However, it varies a lot. For example, Venice used to be a popular port of call. But it’s no longer an option for environmental reasons and to aid over-tourism. Many European cruises might still list Venice as the port of call. However, it’s actually now in Raven, which is 2 hours south of Venice.
You don’t want to show up in the wrong city. So, make sure to double-check this. If you already booked your flight or the nearest airport is not where the port of call is, most cruise lines offer a “shuttle service” for an extra fee.
This means that you will be picked up from the airport and driven to the port of call without having to do it on your own.
Are cruises family-friendly or pet-friendly
Not all cruises are family-friendly. The smaller ones come with both adult-only and family-friendly options. You must check first if the ship is kid-friendly before booking anything.
Pet-friendly cruises are quite new. It does exist, but very limited. If you’re booking this, be aware that if you are allergic to other types of animals, that’s another thing to consider.
DESTINATIONS FOR LONG CRUISES
Not long time ago, Europe and the Caribbean were the top destinations for cruises. But today, you’ll see the industry expand to Asia, Nordic, North America, Africa, and also the Middle East.
This part of the best 3-week cruises article will discuss what types of cruises and which ports of call are available in various continents and regions.
Europe
Europe is easily one of the best places to do long cruises. This is because there’s so much to see, and arranging your own transportation and hotel will take so much time, effort, and planning.
Instead, book a cruise and maximise your 3-week vacation. Another reason to go on a long cruise in Europe is the stunning Mediterranean Sea and the fact that there are ports of call everywhere: England, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, and Greece.
There are even cruises that combine Europe and the Middle East.
Caribbean
The Caribbean is undoubtedly the most popular destination in the Americas. Whether you’re travelling from Canada, the US, or South America, you know that a cruise will have to stop in the Caribbean. Its world-class pristine beaches, fantastic food, and friendly culture are what a perfect beach vacation is all about.
Canada and Alaska
Curious about Canada’s rugged wilderness and Alaska’s untamed beauty? Although these two destinations are not the most affordable, there are still budget-friendly trips that you can book.
Highlights Canada’s pristine wilderness, including the fjords of British Columbia and Alaska’s glacial wonders. Experience the unique indigenous cultures, marvel at the breathtaking wildlife, and witness the natural splendours of this remarkable region.
Not to mention, both Canada and Alaska are quite expensive destinations. So, booking a cruise might be a more affordable option than planning your trip, where you have to arrange accommodation, car rental, and activities.
There are plenty of 3-week cruises that cover both countries, featuring the west coast of Canada and the beautiful regions of Alaska throughout the year. However, Alaska is known for being one of the coldest places in the world and can still be chilly even in summer. So make sure you have this packing list for an Alaskan cruise to stay comfortable during your trip.
The port of call usually is in Anchorage or Vancouver. There might also be ones leaving Seattle in Washington, USA.
USA
It’s fair to say that cruising is a massive part of the American idea of a vacation. Popular cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, Holland, Regent, and Princess are all companies that originated in the US.
Many cruise lines have ports of call from the US coast but are heading to the Caribbean. However, it’s not always the case. Some cruises highlight the East Coast only, such as from New York to Florida. There are also cruises for the West Coast, leaving Seattle and ending up in Los Angeles.
Go to the East Coast if you want to explore US history, while the West Coast is the best for those who want to see national parks and diverse culture.
If Norway and Iceland have been on your list of must-visit destinations, an affordable and exciting way to explore the Northern Fjords and the North Sea is through a 3-week cruise. Top attractions include the geothermal energy of Iceland, the Fjords of Norway, and the fishing industry in both countries.
You’ll also see incredible views of snowcapped mountains, get a chance to dive through two tectonic plates and learn about Viking history and culture. Enjoy hot springs, cascading waterfalls, and raw beauty that only the northern region possesses.
For cruises to these destinations, the usual ports of call are Reykjavik, Akureyri, Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger.
We have 3 weeks in Norway and 3 weeks in Scandinavia itineraries for you to check out.
Middle East and Africa
There are actually cruises that go to the Middle East and Africa. Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Kenya are some of the most famous destinations in this region. Usually, the cruise departs from Europe, either from Greece, Turkey, Spain, Italy, France, Croatia or Portugal.
Asia
Asia is a massive region, so we’ll cover Southeast, South, and East Asia for this section. That’s a lot of islands that offer various cultures, historical sites, fantastic cuisines, and friendly people.
If you want to explore Asia on a cruise, I recommend you focus on one region first. For example, do a Southeast Asia cruise. This trip will feature Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Japan.
Most of the cruise line’s ports of call are in Japan or Singapore. Usually, it’s a roundtrip tour; where you embark is where you’ll finish your cruise as well.
Oceania
Most cruises from or to Oceania feature the USA and Southeast Asia. Usually, it departs in Hawaii (USA), Singapore, Japan, New Zealand, or Australia. You also should expect that most of these cruises are one-way trips.
If the journey is crossing the Pacific (USA to Australia or New Zealand), expect many days of cruising. In this situation, make sure that you pick a great cruise line to ensure that there are plenty of activities on board.

SUMMARY OF THE BEST 3-WEEK CRUISES
One last thing you should remember is that cruise lines most likely run the same cruise or itinerary seasonally. For example, ship A cruises around Europe in summer. Autumn months come, and they will do a continent crossing to the USA since many people would want to skip winter and go to the Caribbean for some sun and sea.
In spring, ship A will cross the continent from the US back to Europe for the summer season again. So, if you found a cruise or itinerary that you really like, but you’re too late for the booking, don’t worry; it will be available again by the next season.
Cruises are really one of the best ways to travel in terms of making the most out of your budget. I hope you found this list of the best 3-week cruises helpful in planning your first cruise that lasts for up to 20 days.
