50 Degrees on the road in search of fun

Hi, I’m David, the new lead editor of Three Week Traveller as of 2025. This means, I’m the chief guinea pig officer. I explore extended routes and come back here to tell you all about it.

This is a passion project, but my day to day job is not too far removed. I have worked overseeing the use of content for marketing at long established backpacker and solo traveller brand, Hostelworld; and currently drain the coffee pod stack at World of Cruising. Alongside these names, I’ve been featured in the Boston Globe regarding my work on travel fitness writing and have moonlighted to work with my favourite hostel group Mad Monkey. Whatever I do is user first. Why are people reading what we do?

It’s my job therefore to work to improve how content looks on the site and the kind of advice given. It’s early days, but if you see my author face on a blog, you know I’ve started to give that itinerary a once over.

Authorship and credibility

Travelling is a lot of people’s passion, just as it is mine. Which means if I am to truly be about that life, I should ensure I act on it with only genuine advice.

Our content is based on real human experiences. This is where we have sat on the rattan chairs and gotten a skin imprint in the bar area. We have drunk the condensation dripping cans leaving embarrassing wet splodges on our shorts and joined in the chorus of vomiting that goes along with the ‘fast boats’ of Southeast Asia.

We don’t need to use AI, because it won’t tell you anything you haven’t already seen before. My goal is that when you read our content, you know you can trust it as truthfully tested. If we say something is good for solo travellers, it means we know we didn’t feel awkward as sin, turning up on our ones there. If we say something is good, we will say why. Context is key for us as we know it is for you.

Anyway, I’ve added pictures of me doing travel stuff, so you know, I’m real and I travel.

Corrections and feedback

If there is anything you think is wrong, innaccurate or warrants attention, please contact us on editor(@)threeweektraveller dot com. Apologies for the odd email structure, we do this to stop our site’s emails getting scraped and spammed. Alternatively, to keep it super simple, drop me a message on my own instagram @masononsocial.

Now, pay stuff.

Affiliate disclosures

So, we told you we don’t promote items simply because we get paid to. We do earn commissions but now how some might think. So how does it work and still be honest?

Great question

Pretty much every travel business under the sun these days is linked to an affiliate payment system. This means even if I tell you Hotel Death is a bad place to stay and I wouldn’t recommend it, but you still want to, and I give you a link to it to do so – there’s a chance I can earn a commission because of ‘affiliate networks’.

(Clearly, the hotel would not pay us to say something bad about them.)

NB: I used that as a made up hotel name. If you are genuinely about to book at a place by that name, we don’t mean to throw shade.

This happens because we are linked to all the major hotel and event reservation platforms like Booking etc, and not by individual hotels. Therefore, we can take our pick of which premises to promote, because we know we can still be remunerated.

What does this mean?

This means, there is nothing that stops us from telling you about our favourite places, as invariably they will be on one of those systems. If you click a link, it won’t cost you any more, but it rewards us with a small fee for discovering the business.

So, if you like what we had to say and want to say thank you. Clicking a link on the page to book your next hotel/hostel/flight/event etc, helps reward our efforts.

But no one, at no time, is paying us to directly tell you that you should stay at X place. That’s not genuine and doesn’t help us grow our profile long time.

That’s how we keep the lights on.
